Following the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in 2021, 61 determined young women were offered refuge and the chance to pursue their education at Arizona State University. This short documentary, filmed entirely on mobile devices, follows the inspiring journeys of Yalda and Latifa, two Afghan scholars who defied the Taliban’s restrictions to chase their dreams. Through their unwavering spirit and the support of their new community, Yalda and Latifa overcome significant obstacles and pave the way for a brighter future for themselves and other young Afghan women. The Last Hug sheds light on the struggle for education rights and the transformative power of opportunity. It is a story of courage, resilience, and the unwavering pursuit of dreams.
about the author
Tasneem Amro is a news reporter and media trainer from the Middle East/Palestine. She received a Hubert Humphrey Fellowship in 2021-2022 in the USA, focusing on human rights and communication. She holds a bachelor’s degree in media and tv production and a master’s degree in European Studies in 2023. Her work primarily centers around women’s rights, climate change, and immigration.
